The Misreading of Penrose

The Misreading of Penrose is a work combining double-bass solo and electronic music. The concept for it is based on the well-known geometric paradox Penrose stairs, in which a staircase, no matter whether ascending or descending, forms a continuous loop. As such, its highest and lowest points cannot be found. To extend the optical illusion caused by the 3D objects drawn on 2D surfaces, time stretching from space commences to generate memories, while the fragmentation of memories reflects human beings’ eagerness for unity triggered by their misunderstanding (perhaps due to their visual limitation). The music narrative is derived from visual translation, building experiences of time flowing via the observations on the dynamic displacement of the staircases.

The interpretation of Penrose stairs is a way of seeing the world through mind’s eye. It explores how hearing connects 2D and 3D, as well as electroacoustic and instrumental music, reflecting how we see real-life voids determines our ability to escape and free ourselves.
