Although lecture performance is often considered a form of performing art, it also appeared within the context of visual art in the 1970s, particularly in works of happening art and performance art. With the rise of live art in the 2000s, lecture performance has reemerged as a practice within contemporary art.
Launching in January 2025, Heteroglossia – Lecture Performance Gathering highlights recent lecture performance works in Taiwan’s contemporary art scene. This event marks the Contemporary Art Platform’s first curatorial program of the year.
The three-day program includes Lecture Performances and Video Screenings, the former featuring CHANG Wen-Hsuan, AU Sow-Yee × CHEN Yow-Ruu (Her Lab Space), LEE Li-Chung, Zmey (YANG Yu-Chiao × CHIANG Hsin-Wei × CHEN Hsien-Wen), JUAN Yung-Han, and Joanne DENG. Each group will be responsible for one performance, presenting works that employ diverse formats, such as stand-up monologues, presentation-style lectures, video projections, or experimental soundscapes. These works aim to explore the dynamics of language and the body’s narrative potential through varying modes of lecture performance.
The Video Screenings section focuses on works in which artists use lecture techniques (excluding third-person narration) to film videos from a first-person perspective. In these works, audiences can observe how artists employ the concepts of presence and voice, using narrative techniques to bridge experiential gaps or as a means of aesthetic exploration. Additionally, some works utilize deepfake technology to portray human identity and the nature of subjectivity in the age of AI. Through this three-day program of performances and screenings, the event examines recent trends in Taiwan’s contemporary art practices related to lecture performance. It also invites audiences to delve into how lecture performance permeates across different media and the effects generated through these interactions.
