Organized by Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB) since 2018, the Play Arts Festival takes “games” and “gathering” as its core concepts. Through diverse, cross-disciplinary performing and visual arts activities, it has established an inclusive art platform for public participation.
Looking ahead, we are actively exploring ways to expand the curatorial formats and content of small-to-medium-scale arts festivals. We aim to examine how collaboration can enhance the curatorial capabilities of creators, giving more artists and creators the opportunity to engage with institutions, understand the curatorial processes—both conceptual and practical—of medium-to-small festival models (such as Play Arts), and ultimately discover and cultivate a new generation of festival curatorial talent.
To this end, we will invite curators, teams, and artists who have participated in Taiwan’s small-to-medium-scale festivals—such as Play Arts and Our Theatre’s Grass Grass Festival—to share their experiences through workshops and lectures. Covering topics from theme conceptualization and performance programming to self-marketing strategies, as well as the context of collaborating with institutions or government agencies, these sessions will help creators dissect various facets of curating and strengthen their practical implementation skills.
We hope these exchanges will bolster the collaborative potential between art creators and civic community groups, exploring innovative ways to bring art into public spaces. Through creative collision and partnership, this initiative seeks to link public engagement with community art actions, build an artistic ecosystem that connects diverse resources, and further expand curatorial and public participation models within Taiwan’s art scene.
