Artist residencies are more than simply providing artists with studios and workspaces; they serve as important platforms for exchange between artists and local cultures, communities, and international networks.
This talk brings together artists participating in this year’s residency programs supported by the Ministry of Culture, along with a special guest, the Director of the Art Site of Railway Warehouse, Hsinchu City, an independent arts organization. Through case studies, the speakers will explore how different types of residency programs respond to local environments, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and provide artists with diverse opportunities for creative practice and exchange.

▌ Hsiangfu CHEN
A Berlin-based installation artist, Hsiangfu CHEN focuses on the dynamic relationships between matter, mechanical structures, and perception. Her background in architectural design enables her to combine the structural logic of engineering with an acute sense of poetic narrative when contemplating the “space.” Drawing on mechanical movement, light, and physical mechanisms, she investigates the mutability of time, order, and perception. Her works encompass large-scale sculptures, installations, and light objects, often using functioning structures as narrative carriers to present the tension and fluidity between rationality and sensibility.
▌ CHEN Hsian-Jung
A Taipei-based ceramic artist, CHEN Hsian-Jung tends to draw inspiration from his everyday life. He distills subjects and concepts through observation and magnification, and deconstructs them into geometric shapes and bright colors to create modalities that are both recognizable and unfamiliar, which respond to our shared life experiences and the cultures derived therefrom. His recent works have revolved around the relationship between the “handmade” and the “industrialized.” He manipulates workflows and erases traces of his hand in pursuit of neatness and perfection, thereby delving into the intersections and mutual exclusions between the two focal points. Meanwhile, he deliberately blurs the boundary between artisticity and functionality to disrupt people’s accustomed linear thinking. His postmodern design ingenuity finds expression in such reconsideration of our relationship with objects.
▌ TSAI Ching-Cheng
TSAI Ching-Cheng started out as a dancer and then moved into theatre, specializing in interdisciplinary choreography, directing and teaching in the performing arts. While residing in the UK, she worked as a dancer and an actor in dance companies, circuses, and theater troupes in London. In recent years, she has collaborated with the Ju Percussion Group, Dark Eyes Performance Lab, Open Theater Group, All U People Theatre, Reno Studios, Inc., Ying Hong Pictures Co., Ltd., and Core Film Production, serving as a choreographer, director, and acting coach. Her works have been presented at the American Dance Festival and arts festivals in Colorado, Prague, the UK, South Korea, and Japan. She has also been invited to teach workshops in South Korea as well as at Malaysia Penang Pac and New Era University College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
▌ LEE Yu-Hsuan
LEE Yu-Hsuan is currently the deputy executive director of Accton Arts Foundation, director of Art Site of Railway Warehouse, Hsinchu City, and serves as a director of Taiwan Art Space Alliance (TASA). Since 2010, she has worked as a project manager on various art and cultural initiatives connecting Taiwan, Japan, and Finland, building extensive experience in international collaboration. Her expertise lies in facilitating team alignment and leading interdisciplinary projects across diverse sectors.
▌ SHIH Ya-Tien
SHIH Ya-Tien is an independent curator and art writer. She approaches curating as a mechanism, a preposition, and a platform for diverse voices. Her curatorial research focuses on the concept of “participation,” integrating environmental and spatial contexts into her practice.
Her curatorial projects take shape across a range of media, including exhibitions, workshops, websites, publications, and radio. Her recent projects include Can We All Fit In? at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, and the international touring project Put ’Em in a Box. She was selected for the Performing Arts Curator Academy at the Taipei Performing Arts Center, and shortlisted for the X-Site project at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
