This reading group examines the concept of the global, and its intersection with infrastructure, development, and the Anthropocene. To that end, we will discuss texts that explore the connection between human and non-human, with the aim of conceptualizing the port as a technology that transforms the sea and its surroundings. With this reading group, we aim to provide some theoretical key words for “de-naturalizing” the sea, by examining how it has been mediated, used, and transformed by human contact. This is a tentative reading list, which will be narrowed down as the date approaches.
