Freeze Historical Reverb : the Perceptual Narratives in the Caves in Taiwan

Due to its sui generis topography and rich yet turbulent history of development, Taiwan

bristles with caves ranging from air-raid shelters to tunnels. Most of them are artificial—for military use or transportation—while few are naturally formed. Their stories become part of our knowledge via the writing system, a process requiring no sensory organ involved. Stranded in modernize life, our knowledge has been detached from our perception. Attempting to experiment on “knowledge” and “perception” as well as reverse their connection and order, this project features the field surveys into these caves around Taiwan and the collection of their stories. Utilizing the natural special sound field, it tries to interpret the first-person auditory experiences in these stories with sound, and represent them through ambisonic (or binaural) recording and encoding format, thereby creating an immersive sound journey. With the first-person perspective, the participants immerse themselves spontaneously in this project, and, more important, they narrate the stories according to their own sensory organs. Besides sharing the sound data derived from the special structure of caves, the project expects to create a way to immerse the audience into others’ experiences and memories.

CREATORS

TM Li

TM Li, a native of Keelung City and a DJ, also engages in electronic, theatrical and incidental music. She believes that sound can communicate the indescribable, which genuinely liberates people. Featuring the manipulation of sound itself with contemporary technology, her oeuvre still embodies salient cultural, historical and social characteristics. Apart from using sound as merely an auxiliary of visual/symbolic narratives, she creates various listening experiences and possibilities for communication by highlighting the perception to the property of sound. Her recent musical works include PrintedNoiseLab’s Reaction Force and Distortion(2017), as well as Bare Feet Dance Theatre’s The End of the Rainbow (2017) and the collaboration Masses (2019). Her personal sound performances include Search for Goddess (Taiwan Women Theatre Festival, 2017) and Future Shelter (The Keelung Homecoming Festival, 2019).
