About Asia Art Archive (Taipei Office)
Who We Are | Asia Art Archive (AAA) is an independent non-profit organisation co-founded by Claire Hsu and Johnson Chang in 2000. Our mission is to document and preserve the histories of recent art from Asia, facilitating access to research materials and supporting the circulation of knowledge across scholarly and cultural communities. AAA operates internationally, with activities encompassing archival collections, research, and public programmes.
Taipei Office | Since 2022, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the AAA Taipei Office has been based at the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB). Through research-led digitisation and the systematic development of metadata and archival databases, we work to ensure that Taiwan’s art archives are accessible to international scholarship and maintained in accordance with professional archival standards.
Our Network | Our collaborative network spans Asia and the Americas. Through shared research and resources, we seek to contribute a more pluralistic approach to the writing of recent art history.
Research Highlights
Independent Art Spaces in Taiwan (IAST) | Supported by the Ministry of Culture, this project focuses on the research and development of archives relating to independent art spaces in Taiwan, particularly those established between the late 1980s and early 2000s. The first phase (2022–2025) completed six archival collections. The second phase continues this work by expanding research into the diverse practices of Taiwan’s independent art spaces and developing further archival holdings in this field.

Interviews with founders and participants of independent art spaces provide valuable insights into the operation, identity, and interconnections of such spaces across Taiwan from the 1980s to the 2000s, helping to preserve collective memory and critical historical knowledge:

Public Engagement
Knowledge Production & Reactivation | Since establishing the AAA Taipei Office, we have worked to transform archival materials into sites of dialogue and exchange through international symposia, exhibitions, lectures, and a dedicated internship programme. Concurrently, our publishing initiatives seek to enhance the visibility and critical study of modern and contemporary art within global academic discourse.
Vision
Deepening Local Engagement | To enhance access to art archives, foster connections between artists and academic institutions, and further enrich the scholarly study of Taiwan’s art history.
Global Sharing | To support the long-term development of Asian art scholarship through cross-regional collaboration, ensuring that diverse historical perspectives are situated and recognised within a global intellectual context.
