CAMP! — Exercises in Collective Action

Centered on the “CAMP” model, this project features a three-month initiative of issue-based inquiry and co-learning. We observe that in contemporary society, moments that forge close-knit solidarity have become increasingly rare. “Disasters” and “sports” emerge as two of the most quintessential catalysts: the former necessitate emergency mutual aid in times of crisis, while the latter, exemplified by national teams in international sporting events, serve as a tangible embodiment of collective imagination. This leads us to ask: Can such collaborative synergy and temporary assembly be reconfigured through artistic intervention into a sustainable pedagogical model that responds to existing educational paradigms?

The project invites “adolescents”— whose identities and perspectives are still in a formative stage—as its primary participants. Integrating curatorial, pedagogical, and research expertise, our team has designed an interactive mechanism encompassing site observation and consensus-building. Through co-learning activities, we aim to lower the threshold for engaging in issue-based discussions. Within the camp’s non-hierarchical, collective decision-making framework, participants are encouraged to develop their own observations and practices in response to current societal conditions.

Ultimately, participants will work in small groups to realize their projects (e.g., actions, workshops, or games) collaboratively within an exhibitionary or performative context. Transitioning from passive learners to active agents, participants will physically rehearse alternative possibilities for these temporary collectives. They will also re-examine “publicness” through such radical pedagogical practices. In doing so, they will manifest a concrete sense of subjectivity deeply rooted in the context of Taiwan.

CREATORS

LIN Yu-Hsuan, JUAN Pin-Wei, and LIAO Cong-Hao

The project team comprises LIN Yu-Hsuan, JUAN Pin-Wei, and LIAO Cong-Hao, bringing together expertise in curatorial practice, localized practice, and artistic research. We share a collective focus on how art intervenes in society. Amidst a reality fraught with geopolitical uncertainties and frequent disasters, we aim to reexamine the relationships among the individual, space, and collective will.

The composition of the team reflects three key dimensions of the project: From the perspective of an independent curator, LIN Yu-Hsuan has long explored how individuals coexist with various disasters, be they natural, human-made, or political, while deconstructing the tension between humankind and space. Deeply engaged in experimental education and fieldwork, JUAN Pin-Wei acts as a localized practitioner who grounds youth participation in concrete urban-rural issues. LIAO Cong-Hao specializes in art theory with a focus on alternative forms of audience participation, providing a practical foundation for the project’s interactive mechanism.

Through the convergence of these three dimensions, namely the “curatorial framework,” the “localized grounding,” and the “participatory mechanism,” the team members will serve as facilitators and collaborators throughout this project. We channel the “collective imagination found in international sporting events” and the “emergency collaborative spirit during disasters” to generate the operational driving force behind “CAMP.” Within the temporary site of the camp, we seek to lower the threshold for engaging in issue-based discussions. Our work goes beyond merely executing an educational outreach program; it involves guiding adolescents to challenge the conventional frameworks of everyday life, thereby prompting them to collectively rehearse and manifest their thoughts on Taiwan’s “temporary subjectivity.
