2019/11/23 (Sat.) 19:30
Zhongzheng Auditorium, Taipei Zhongshan Hall
To broaden the dynamics of C-LAB Sound Festival “Diversonics,” the concert “Technology vis-à-vis Music” will be held on November 23rd at Taipei Zhongshan Hall’s Zhongzheng Auditorium to explore the diversity of sound art.
An explosive concert that brings together the musicians from L’Instant Donné with IRCAM. The composers, all of whom have passed through IRCAM, stimulate instrumental gesture through technology: the impact of percussion in Raphael Cendo’s work, virtuosity and cinematographic speed in Magnus Lindberg’s piece, a burlesque theatre of light and movement by Alexander Schubert.
Olivier Messiaen’s solitary work is directed towards nature, without technology: a bird escaping the abyss, “it is our desire for light, stars, rainbows and jubilant vocalizations!”
-Alexander SCHUBERT: Serious smile, for piano, percussion, cello, Conductor and electronics (13’)
-Olivier MESSIAEN: Abîme des oiseaux (movement of Quatuor pour la fin du temps), for clarinet (8’)

-Magnus LINDBERG: Steamboat Bill Junior, for clarinet and cello (10’)

Composer CHEN Shu-Si likes to travel far from the noise and clamor of Taipei City. Driving along the highways that connect Taipei and Yilan and Yilan and Hualien, Chen feels the freedom and joy that the vast views of blue skies and blue ocean bring. Along the way, he discovers scenes that he attempts to describe with sound effects and music. Why has he adopted the musical vocabulary of the indigenous Amis tribe? It is due to this tribe’s geographical location and the source materials and characteristics of its music. He hopes that during this concert that the audience enjoys his perception of the beauty of bright skies and blue ocean.

The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto
The year of 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto written by CHEN Gang and HO Zhanhao. Violinist SU Shienta, who was part of The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto’s Taiwan premiere in 1989, is invited to collaborate with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra to perform this work in which virtual 3D images, virtual set and puppet show are incorporated to create the real emotions conveyed by the origianl work. With the text of The Butterfly Lovers as the starting point, Hong Kong sand animation artist Hoichiu applied Tilt Brush tools to create a 3D VR set mixed with a show by Jin Kwei Lo Puppetry Company filmed in a virtual studio and all elements are then integrated using 3D imaging techniques. The result is a dreamlike space for reconstructing the moving love story of Liang Shangbo and Zhu Yingtai. The Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) of France also collaborated, developing a surround sound system onsite. Audience members wear 3D glasses to watch the story of two lovers unfold while listening to this exquisite musical work, resulting in a unique concert experience based on new technologies.
