Protests in Hong Kong began in 2014 when the Chinese government reneged on an agreement to grant Hong Kong open elections to elect the region’s chief executive. People of Hong Kong demanded “true universal suffrage”, but the demand was declared by the Chinese government to be unconstitutional. Tens of thousands of protestors occupied the streets outside of the Government Headquarters, a critical area in Hong Kong, to fight for democracy, marking the beginning of the Umbrella Movement. This film charts the origins of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement through the eyes of the activists and ordinary people who made it happen. From the June 4th Candlelit Vigil until September 28th, protestors occupied the streets outside of the Government Headquarters, and this film puts us at the heart of the action to witness a “blossoming of democracy” in Hong Kong.
