C-LAB Sound Festival: Diversonics

C-LAB Sound Festival: Diversonics
Technology vis-à-vis Music

The Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB) and the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) of France have joined forces to establish the Taiwan Sound Lab aiming to explore the integration of new sound technologies, arts and culture. To announce its completion, these two organizations are presenting the C-LAB Sound Festival: Diversonics from November 22 to November 30 featuring sound technology works from Taiwan and France at C-LAB and Taipei Zhongshan Hall.

On the first day of the festival on November 22, well-known French visual arts group 1024 architecture and Italy’s Quartetto Maurice will present an outdoor performance of IRCAM’s production of OPUS at C-LAB. The following day, C-LAB and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra joins together to perform The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto at Taipei Zhongshan Hall. This year marks the 60th anniversary of this work. As such, violinist SU Shienta, who participated in the Taiwan premiere of this work 30 years ago, is invited to take part in this celebrative performance. Incorporating new technologies, innovative sound and visual effects are presented. During the concert, audience members put on 3D glasses to watch an animated puppet show produced by a team at Tainan National University of the Arts, Hong Kong artist Hoichiu and Jin Kwei Lo Puppetry Company. By infusing traditional music with the power of technology, a unique concert experience is created.

During the festival, Taiwan Sound Lab will present new sound technology works. Re: A Morning of Taipei, co-produced by C-LAB and the Taiwan Film Institute, brings together musician LIM Giong, composer CHEN Chiahui and sound engineers from Taiwan Sound Lab to create the musical score and contemporary compositions for A Morning in Taipei, the 1964 silent mockumentary directed by PAI Chingjui. A Song Within Us is the latest work by theater director Fangas Nayaw and is Taiwan’s first indigenous VR musical. Based on the theme of the Song of the Tafalong, it features a surround sound setting and dynamic visual effects created with sound interactive technology. Taiwan Sound Lab and IRCAM, working together on recording, production and installation of 16.1-channel surround sound system, seamlessly integrate Ambisonics and VR technologies for this performance.
