Introduction to the talk
Initiated by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Global Innovation Hub (FNF), the exhibition “They Told Me It's Not Your Fault. And I Told Them Everything Will Be Fine.” features artist Ting-Ting Cheng in an in-depth exploration of tech-facilitated gender-based violence.
In the presentation of the work, Cheng moves away from conventional archival displays; instead, she incorporates news reports, interviews with gender-based violence advocates and survivors, investigative journalists covering related cases, therapists as well as her personal experience to conceive a fictional script. She creates a 20-minute single-viewer immersive experience, integrating space installation, voice narration, smartphone screens, and live performance. This work highlights the pervasive nature of tech-facilitated gender-based violence and the diverse identities of those involved.
This talk invites artist Ting-Ting Cheng to share the behind-the-scenes story of this work and her reflections on how artistic practices engage with and navigate sensitive topics that may trigger traumatic responses. Additionally, journalist I-Ting Chiang will discuss her in-depth investigative reports on tech-facilitated gender-based violence, including Youth Inferno and Online Video Sexual Extortion. The two speakers will also share their experiences collaborating in the development of this work.
