Imagination and Practice of Digital Technology and Contemporary Performance

In addition to film making applications, virtual production enables new forms for contemporary performance. Working collaboratively, new media artist Dr Sam Mcgilp and digital choreographer Harrison Hall create hybrid digital / choreographic performances with forms that have never been possible before. In this presentation, they will collaborate with NAXS FUTURE, a new media art group, to discuss the use of emerging technologies, experimentation with contemporary performance scripts, and showcase the "Body Crysis/身體災變" project, highlighting practical technology applications and future content development through a Taiwan-Australia collaboration.

| Sam Mcglip
Sam’s work is situated at the nexus of media art, contemporary performance and cinema. He works to find new digital dramaturgies for performance. His recent PhD research at RMIT,  investigated digital iterations - distinct digital art works with a relationship to live performance - and was awarded the emerging scholar award at the Art in Society conference (Vancouver) 2019 and the Vice Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship.

Sam and Harrison first collaborated on “The Venusian Slip” at Temperance Hall as part of their Midsummer Festival program. This work was made into a dance film by Sam, which toured globally. In 2019, Sam received a Career Development Grant from the Australia Council and Sam and Harrison undertook a residency at the Kinosaki International Art Centre. Through this period they developed a new media x performance work with Yuiko Masukawa and Makoto Uemura, which catalysed their shared work to center the body in digital experience.

| Harrison Hall
Harrison’s work situates contemporary performance and dance in experiential art environments. His works offer a sense of transport into altered states of reality to shift unfounded beliefs about the world. His devising process is always grounded in somatic exploration and finding shared physical states. Harrison’s recent work flows between digital and live worlds, working to increase the embodied experience in mixed digital and live contexts.

He has collaborated with many artists including: Yumi Umuimare and Theatre Gumbo (Japan), The Australian Ballet, Jo Lloyd, Stephanie Lake, Philip Adams’ Balletlab, Shaun Parker Company + Ivo Dimchev (Bulgaria), Gideon Obarzanek, Lucy Guerin Inc, Antony Hamilton, Dancenorth and many more.  In recent years he has focussed his energy in creating multiple hybrid projects for Chunky Move in Melbourne.
