How can we stay connected when the internet goes down?
This is not a new question. Whether due to natural disasters, war, government intervention, or damage to infrastructure, communities around the world have faced the challenge of communication breakdowns. In response, they have developed various alternative communication technologies and models of community collaboration to maintain the flow of information and basic contact.
In the past, Taiwan’s stable and well-developed internet infrastructure meant that large-scale internet shutdowns were not a common concern. However, as regional geopolitical risks increase and discussions around the vulnerability of critical infrastructure become more urgent, the question of how to maintain communication when the internet is disrupted has become an important issue to prepare for in advance.
This workshop will focus on Meshtastic, an open-source, low-power mesh communication system. Designed for beginners with no prior experience, the workshop will introduce its basic principles, possible use cases, and practical operation. Meshtastic uses LoRa radio technology to allow devices to form a decentralized mesh communication network without relying on mobile networks, Wi-Fi, or the internet. In recent years, it has become one of the offline communication solutions widely discussed and practiced by communities around the world.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, we will start from zero and introduce how Meshtastic works, how to choose hardware, how to install the software, and how to complete basic setup. First-time Meshtastic users are welcome to join with their own devices. Those without devices are also welcome to come and learn; a small number of devices will be available on-site for participants to try out.
