This program offers a selection of short films presented as part of the Vertical Features screening series in Toronto between 2016 and 2019. The series attempts to promote vital non-fiction film and video that has had little or no Toronto exposure, including documentary, essay films, hybrid experiments, and artists’ moving image, placing contemporary films in dialogue with historical rediscoveries.

Holding Patterns explores themes of flow and stasis across a selection of Canadian and international films by a mix of established and emerging artists, including work by Filipa César, Alexandra Cuesta, Nazlı Dinçel, Ralitsa Doncheva, Ryan Ermacora & Jessica Johnson, and Su Friedrich.  Whether seen, heard, or located through material traces, the films place humans at their centre, as figures whose spatial navigations serve to temporarily halt or slow the steady march of time, inviting moments of social, political, geographical, or familial histories.

This event is curated by Jesse Cumming, organized by The Other Cinema and Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB), and with a sponsorship from the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei.
