A hidden industry of “the cleaners” consists of outsource content moderators taken on by people in the developing world hired by Silicon Valley, the Internet hub of the world. Their job is to scour the internet everyday to shield the world’s internet users from “inappropriate content”. However, such content has also resulted in lasting negative impacts on their mental health and psychological wellbeing.
