Prior to a Copy is Still a Copy: Photography and the Dissemination of Images

A photo per se is a copy, and other copies may exist prior to it. The study of photography’s history used to pursue originality or authenticity, inquire meaning or aesthetics of images, or confine itself to the exploration of photos as a medium. However, recent discussions focus more on the extensive mediums for copying images. Sometimes photos are not merely photos; they lose the originality and destination in the process of duplication and dissemination, eventually becoming images of photography.

The talk will begin with the Japanese cartoonist Yoshiharu TSUGE’s story of appropriating a photo from Taiwan, through which the speaker will discuss photos without original sources due to the course of duplication, as well as the dissemination of photos and the uniqueness of photography compared to other visual mediums. As embodying the idea of “dissemination” from Jacques Derrida, photos gradually rid themselves of originality during the course of différance, taking a journey of generating multiple meanings.
