Non-Confined Space-Sounds of the other Worlds

Sounds of the other Worlds: Tag Team to The Other Side is an exhibition/performance project co-created by electronic music producer, Sonic Deadhorse, and visual artist, CHIU Chih-Chun. The long-term collaborators depart from the two electronic music groups that they are a part of, Sam-Seng-Hiàn-Gē and Non-Confined Space, integrating the symbolic local sounds found in the creative context of Sam-SengHiàn-Gē and Non-Confined Space’s highly liberated improvisational and experimental music. The two groups’ distinctively different creative methodologies are applied and combined into a real-time interactive installation, with abstracted sounds transformed into a spatial expression and then visualised. The result is an immersive audio-visual exhibition/performance that brings together traditional symbols and a contemporary improvisational flow of energy. Their long-term collaborator, the Taiwan-based video game production team behind the game, PAGUI, provided the 3D modelling for the project, which the artists then adapted and transformed for the project. The hope is for people to reconnect with their feelings of nostalgia and childhood memories inside this digital cyber temple, while also instilling associations of rituals and party vibes from different space-times into this place. Over in this world, geometric distance does not exist between people, but what exists is a length that validates each person’s presence. Referring to Martin Heidegger’s discussions on "Entfernen" (abolishing a distance), it can be applied in this world as an unreserved expansion of one’s body; this infinitely expanding metropolis of consumption codes is the cabin in the Black Forest, where the audience can roam in a narrative of materialism and transcend beyond practical inertia. In this world, energy and matter are each other’s gauges, and time and space also measure one another. As members of the audience improvise and interact with the sounds, collective movements and consciousnesses then merge at the same time, and self-awareness is lost. Consequently, the music/sound is the manifestation of intent. Like a visit to the underworld to communicate with the spirits, one can enter into different dimensions and embark on a collective virtual creative endeavor.

Non-Confined Space is an electronic improvisation duo founded by CHENG Ko-Chun (guitar/electronic/live visual) and wind musician HSIEH Min-Yen in 2014. Like two parallel lines, Cheng and Hsieh have had their own bumpy journeys exploring the fields of experimental electronic music and modern jazz for a few years, and seem to have gained some rewards as well. Different from the common vocabularies of jazz improvisation, in which one relies on bodily and muscle memory, they re-sequentialize real-time samples, and use different programs to generate feedback, struggle, and even disregard, of sounds and musical phrases. The duo does not hold any presumptions, nor insist on any typological frameworks, let alone sticking to superficial and shallow terms such as “electronic+jazz.” So, the audience can only approach their works and gain individual meta experiences based on their respective context of life by attending the “live performances,” entering the “space,” and listening to the “sounds.” Instead of shattering structures, they re-define them; and instead of jumping out of any existing framework, they render it suppler and more organic. By transforming metaphorical structures of signs into visualized sounds, the making of a sound and the next is freed from inevitability. Through long-forgotten structural thinking of aesthetics, they use “musical scale” and “sound-making objects” as a method to deconstruct the stereotypical perception of signifiers and texts.
