Talks
When Objects Carry Emotion: Sound, Cassette Tapes, and the Analog Age

This lecture centers on the promotion of archival knowledge, focusing on the understanding and experience of sound recording media, while inviting participants to reconsider how sound can be preserved and reproduced. The session will open with a presentation by artist Leo LIU, who will share the historical background of Dogpig Art Café, as well as the creative process behind the work Missing Teeth Piano and the origins of recording album series. Through the interweaving of music and spatial memory, the lecture seeks to inspire new imaginations surrounding sound archives and sonic memory.

Embracing the spirit of “embedding emotions into objects,” the lecture will also feature Being YU, founder of Kind of Blue Records, who will introduce the development and characteristics of sound recording media, while sharing unique cassette album collections and possibilities for sound-based archival practices.

Through exchanges of stories, media, and sound culture, participants will be invited to explore the charm and significance of sound recording from multiple perspectives.

|Leo LIU

Leo LIU (b. 1962) was born in Pingtung, Taiwan. LIU graduated from the Department of Applied Arts at the Shih Chien Junior College (now Shih Chien University). His practice spans painting, archival work, and action-based projects, often engaging with local culture and social movements. From 1999 to 2014, he ran Dogpig Art Café in Yancheng District, Kaohsiung, an important gathering place for artists and alternative art activities in southern Taiwan. He usually combines his artistic practice with walking and landscape observations, as seen in his ongoing Watching the Mountains project, which reflects on the relationship between people and the land. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Chiayi Art Museum, Pingtung Art Museum, and the National Center of Photography and Images, among other venues.

|Being YU

As the founder of Kind of Blue Records, he leads the only cassette-only record store in Taiwan. His journey began with a 2016 collaboration with CMP Creative Lab, followed by a milestone pop-up in Hong Kong before settling into a permanent home in Taichung in 2017. More than just a retailer, his eponymous label (est. 2020) acts as a bridge, exporting Taiwanese sounds to the world via tape. Today, he is best known for his distinctive "Cassette DJ" sets, where he spins 80s and 90s local classics, proving that the soulful warmth of analog tape still resonates deeply with today’s youth.
